How does Microsoft Dynamics SL compare to Acumatica?

  • Dynamics SL costs more for each individual user license; Acumatica, on the other hand, is priced for unlimited users – providing a more scalable and cost effective solution.

  • Dynamics SL offers on-premise and hosted deployment options. Acumatica offers multiple choices – including cloud.
  • Dynamics SL’s core modules cannot be accessed from a web browser. The SL “Business Portal” provides web access for only a small subset of the product’s features. Acumatica is designed and built for the web, and can be used on any browser based device.
  • CRM is not included with Dynamics SL Business Essentials and requires a separate “connector” to integrate them. Acumatica’s Customer Management Suite is included and fully integrated.
  • Dynamics SL web services work only with a subset of the application; Acumatica’s web services are the most complete toolset in the mid-market.
  • Dynamics SL is built on proprietary technology (some 16-bit code is still remaining) while Acumatica can be customized using standard development tools.

Other Disadvantages to Dynamics SL

  • Dynamics SL is not easily localized internationally.
  • Customization and development can be more expensive and time consuming with Dynamics SL.

  • SL requires customization to change field names in reports.
  • No journal vouchers.
  • No dashboard.
  • No approval process for check printing.
  • No contract feature in AR for contract building.
  • No Deferred Revenue module.
  • No security at the field level.
  • Can’t have multiple periods open at the same time.
  • Most reports don’t drill down to source documents.
  • To schedule items, you must buy the add-on Application Server module.
  • Requires purchasing an additional module to process ACH payments through a third-party.
  • Requires third-party involvement for audit history.
  • Forces you to buy access to the source code ($3,400).
